Some history on the church...
Ascension Lutheran Church, located at 827 Wildwood Ave, Columbia, SC was founded in 1912. The founders of this church, sought out the famous artist, George Hardy Payne to create truly awe-inspiring stained-glass windows. People tell of trips to Greece and the fabulous church artwork there, but there is a little-known, humble forgotten church in the Eau Claire Community with windows that will bring you to tears. The altar window and the many other windows that depict the Life of Jesus are made by Tiffany Glass Company.
Ascension is a historic gem for more than one reason. Reverend Jackie Utley shines a light as bright and as bold as the church’s windows. She made history as the first African American to be ordained in the Lutheran Church in South Carolina. History was also made again at Ascension, as she was the first African American and first female to serve as its Pastor.
There is a
little-known fact about Martin Luther King and the Lutheran Church. Martin Luther’s name became influential in the name changing of the great Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and his father Martin Luther King, Sr., who were both born as Michael King.
In 1934, Michael King, Sr. attended the Baptist World Alliance meeting in Berlin, Germany. He was appalled by what was happening in Hitler’s Germany, but he was inspired by Martin Luther’s teachings of peace and justice. Martin Luther lived from 1483-1546. When Michael King, Sr. returned home, he changed his name to Martin Luther King and later he changed his son’s name too.
Pastor Jackie has landed on one of the last frontiers. Whereas churches are thought of as “Black” or “White,” at Ascension Lutheran, we know we have more in common than we have different, and we build on that.
Churches around the nation are closing at record numbers, when we need our churches most.
Let's make church routine again.
We hope you will join us Easter Sunday.
